Here I explored the theme of constructed landscapes and face value. I preferred constructed landscapes due to my love for architecture and natural landscapes. At first I was confused about constructed landscapes as I didn’t know what was meant by constructed. I then began to understand the concept of it and started to take apart landscapes and put them back together in rearranged forms. Through my developments of constructed landscapes I researched many artists. These include Hiroshi Sugimoto , Mandy Williams , Liz Nielson and Geraldo de Barros. I discovered the work of blurry photos through the artist Sugimoto and applied it to my works. I was also inspired by his use of black and white colouring which I also implemented into my work. The work of Mandy Williams influenced my final piece of constructed landscapes. As she split landscapes with shapes such as squares and rectangles. This is shown through my work with slides as I cut many landscapes up and combined them together , adding dark shapes to distort them. I have learned the multiple approaches to constructing a landscape such as through Liz Nielsen and her work with card and paper. As she shows the landscapes can be constructed physically as well as through photoshop. I have tried to show that landscapes can be created through multiple photos and not just a singular one. I have showed different perspectives of landscapes in one photo , such as my inspired work of Mandy Williams.
I carried out multiple experiments with different techniques. For example , I learned how to use photoshop to create my first responses to Mandy Williams. For example, I used shapes in photoshop to divide my pictures. I combined this with my exploration of Hiroshi Sugimotos blurred photos and black and white filter. This experiment did not turn out as well as I liked as the shapes did not necessary fit with the pictures them selves and looked almost out of place. However, this does apply to the idea of constructed landscapes as some aspects of the landscape and put together and warped meaning it will not look perfect. I then explored with my use of slides. First I developed a small series of about 7 slides. Each slide had some distortion or abstract feature to it such as my use of black shapes stuck randomly in the photo. I then decided to continue this idea of slides as I liked the effect the cello tape created on the asatate. I developed this idea further by producing a piece of 30 slides. Each slide was combined with 2 landscapes, some coloured some black and white. This work is personal as many of the pictures use were taken on day outs with family to parks. I found cutting up the slides and sticking everything thing together quite challenging due to this being a long and fiddly process. Furthermore, some slides kept unsticking and it became increasingly frustrating for me. However, overtime thid became more easy and a habit for me.
I have used my website to record my progress and development of my work through constructed landscapes. I have shown my developments in techniques such as photoshop, slides and the use of photograms. I have shown my favourite pieces of work in my online exhibition page. These include many black and white images as I enjoy this type of photo because black and white creates a mysterious mood to the photo. I have also shown my slides in the exhibition and they contrast with the black and white images.
For my final outcome I filmed my 30 slide project. This included 30 different slides that have been in someway distorted by my work of combining multiple landscapes and cityscapes together. The cello tape also changed some of the pictures by making them look grainy and old. This was not my original intention but it worked out as it further warped the landscape which worked out as it fitted with the topic of constructed landscapes. However some slides did not turn out as planned as some were too blurry for me and I was not able to tell the original photograph. I believe I have successfully explored this topic as I have shown the breaking up and combination of landscapes and cityscapes through multiples processes. Personally , if I had more time I would have developed a sculpture with my photos because it would have shown the multiple layers and the three dimensional aspect to landscape and architecture.
